The most devastating part of playing new maps in sDOM is really getting to know to the spawns and getting to your point quickly. For me it takes 1, maybe 2 times to get to know the map.

Played sDOM for the first time today. I was lost on MountainMan map and kept visiting other points. It was fun. I didn't time anything since I don't know what spawns where.

On a more important note, Hermione won against me in iTDM. Good Job Hermione!! So proud of you <3 :D

pssh.. add regular stalwart map itdm on ip5 and ip6. fatboy still on.

ok. back on topic. MountainMan is a cool map. I like the little bathhouses. I think their neat windigo.

Damn Hermione you were hitting me as a stick figure for half the game? I seen it here with holder too. You have to face him now. I think we are on to a new quest, .captain and 1v1 on and up. Here is some people who are close to us that we might win:

Hermione|nomic vs holder
Hermione|nomic vs windigo
Hermione|nomic vs Rickjames

Sakura|FACE vs Pantera
Sakura|FACE vs windigo
Sakura|FACE vs Rickjames

Pantera frags more than me on Command defense so he'll be a good one to face first. Lets save Rickjames for last.

The best I'd like to see: windigo vs Rickjames

Will post all wins as well as losses for me. ggs holder I'm sure you will get me another 1v1. I'm more interested in Hermione's 1v1's now. Were on the bottom lets work our way up. We got no pride to lose.

We are hijacking this thread so bad. Ignore us.

Back on topic:

The most common complaints I hear from guys that don't like sDOM are that it's "just a 1v1" or that it's "confusing". I think both of these perceptions can be changed by teaching the mod more to new players. When I was learning sDOM, back when the mod was first getting pugged in #ipug, there were guys like PACO and detox who would take lots of time explaining things before maps to me.

For example, in warmup mode before my first time playing cg bridge, they taught me basic things like:
-All routes from each spawn, and which to pick depending on enemy position (e.g. don't always take main bouncer when you spawn by it if there's 2 enemies both sitting up there dming it)
-Communicate where you're coming from and sync with partner
-Call where the stats player is coming from if you see him
-Drop on armor as soon as bridge is cleared
-Don't spend much time at the thighpads bouncer, it's a disadvantaged position if enemy sneaks up stairs
-Push to statues when the guy asks for help
-Call and try to time every belt and amp
etc

PACO would yell at me if I missed an amp timing. These days, you're lucky if some players time the amp at all. Players will show the new guy where his point is, make sure he can find it, and go. So he ends up with no understanding or appreciation for the dynamics of the position, and spends all game rushing it and playing point-and-click 1v1, which can be boring. Or he gets matched up vs a much more experienced player who constantly predicts him and takes 5 shots to kill, and he's confused and disheartened.

No cp in sDOM should be played 100% 1v1, there's usually some communication to give. Even the most isolated cps, like peak low, let you push into the spawn room or call when the mid player is going up the steps. Getting just 3 extra kills a map on a guy because you knew where he was coming from or because a team m8 put a shot in him can easily make a big difference when it comes to holding your cp, especially if it lets you get a belt or something. That's part of the beauty of the mod.

So, like PACO said in his post, take time before a map to share knowledge with new players and try to give them fair matchups. Encourage communication and teamplay. This way, you give them a better appreciation of the mod and everyone benefits.

Fucking up your opponent's amp boost, only to then complete the boost moments after, is incredibly satisfying :OWgrinsgasm:

To that point, this vid was posted on one of the sDOM threads on GlobalUnreal, with some boosts. Good start.

Wtf? Why hate on the mod that brought 90% of us here, is the most popular and consequentially the last standing mod in this game? That attitude will directly affect this community's longevity in my opinion. People aren't 'thick' or 'gorillas' because they don't want to play sDOM, Irony.. You aren't enlightened gamers because you know how to play it. It's fucking simple.
I won't join sDOM even though i would love to support this community and make up numbers. Even though i probably will end up in ictf pickups during the games, i won't commit as i feel i should probably be getting on with something more productive :P The thing is, I simply don't derive the enjoyment from it that you people seem to. It's a matter of opinion not understanding. When i play sDOM i basically end up playing a boring 1v1 with someone who is usually better than i am. I've never liked DM. We both always know where each other are. He's at the control point and i'm running to him from a spawn point. Every now and then someone turns up with an amp and either makes life harder or briefly does my job for me. At my skill level it isn't fun. It also isn't hard to get to grips with the hp to 100 or the location of vials. There's a bit of excitement with amps, belt, keg timing and some teamplay with boosts, team support and other aspects but basically i play a 1v1 that i will most likely lose.
In ictf i can make a nice solo action, help in a great team action, meet up and get a few clutch covers or boost the flag carrier out and change the shape of the game with a few seconds of luck or skill and a cap and i find that exhilaration and the teamplay fun. I've never been a top shooter so this is where i derive my enjoyment and it's still a rush after 15 years. I have tried sDOM and it doesn't work for me.
Was the community asked which mod to play next? Just a thought. We are here to play an old computer game, there isn't many of us left and most of us are now professionals in our late 20s or 30s..

Yes community been asked and most People said sdom and sactf.

Anyway. .imo it doesn't matter if we play the sdom season with 80 or 140 people.
Quality of the games. .streams and Organisation is important. .

still would be cool if people just give it a try..at least ending up playing fun dev games...

Considering iCTF is still the most popular pug mod even with an sDOM season beginning in a week, it is pretty clear a true scientific assessment would indicate iCTF would be the mod of choice for the upcoming league. saCTF was the least active season under GU and pugs died down significantly. saCTF should be a short tournament, maybe spanning a couple of weeks.

Well Pun, i still think there is something people don't understand in sdom. They see the point they play as in just losing or winning it, while thats a very wrong thing to do. Even if you are predicted to lose a point against someone, the amount you lose for is very important, if the teams are balanced. I see sdom match as a constant team play game. Every point, kill or damage you make to passing players, matters. In ictf there is much more useless action. I do understand though, that playing someone who has triple the skill is boring, but there are dev games :f and in pugs you shouldn't be paired with someone like that

I disagree with you, Pun. I think Cromaniac told it correctly. If teams are balanced, you can lose your point but it doesn't mean you'll lose the game. If they put a harder opponent against you, it means it will be easier somewhere... and you should take benefit of it and do your best. It happened couple of times when I played sDOM season and I sometimes even won against players that are completely better than me, using armors/push out of edges/calling teammates/map knowledge...

Also, YES, there are some 1v1 points, but there are usually taken by one of the strongest player of the roster.
Dev games shouldn't be a problem.. it'll if salaries aren't set correctly but you guys certainly still play iCTF pugs instead of sDOM pugs so this is hard to tell who is better than him/her.

i think both of you missed some of his points there.. i'm pretty sure he understands how sdom is played, the importance of the powerups, and the different cps. he is also commenting on how it just isn't as enjoyable for him.

i think the people who don't sign up for sdom echo a lot of his opinions, including myself. i actually really enjoyed my sdom team when i played in whatever season that was on rain's team -- we had a lot of fun during our matches even when we lost. however, i'd much rather play more LoL and wait for an iCTF season than play sdom matches, it's just an opinion.

If ut game types were means of transportation based on popularity and performance this is how it would look like in comparison:

Well, as you can see this comparison says it all /thread
