Last weekend was OwnedWell's inaugural tournament - KOTG. Here's a statistical summary of everything that went down during the tournament.
In total across the event,
158 people were
electrified by an enhanced shock rifle a total of 37,423 times. There were
5188 double kills,
1598 multi kills,
242 ultra kills and the small matter of
242 monster kills across the 31 maps of Unreal Tournament played. There were
1246 killing sprees (an average of over 4 per person per map!),
71 rampages, and
5 people who hit dominatings (Decl, Monk, Nick and Spriggan) as well as Finalz who bagged himself the award for longest streak with
1 unstoppable on the way to winning his quarter final on Bellicose.
Lets start with a bit of analysis over the champions performances.
* Note: Unlike in UT Stats, Double kills listed here are inclusive. So if you get a multi kill, it still counts towards your double kills (as you did also get a double kill!)Round 1Cromaniac started off semi-quietly in . Placed in a heat with some big fraggers in Hatchet and Impure, as well as some big egos in PACO, Cromaniac could only manage 4th place in his heat, with 27th place overall in the round. He comfortably qualified from this heat with a +43 spread from 6th place.
Round 2Next up on , Cromaniac took advantage of all the practice he had been putting in for the weeks leading up to King of the Grins by dominating his heat, winning comfortably by 11 frags, and having a reasonable gap between himself and the other competitors from about half way through the heat:
Quarter-FinalsOn , Cromaniac struggled a bit more compared to his other rounds (these things are all relative). Finishing in 4th place, he was clear of danger of being eliminated (+13), but either way got himself a lower seed here for the next round than he had done on previous maps.
Semi-FinalsIn Cromaniac started to step up his game a bit in 'the winners semi' - the heat that contained 3 previous winners in Hatchet Vitz and Dewsick. Cromaniac put in another solid performance, with the 4th best performance of the round to comfortably get into the final. Things looked ominous though, as he was beaten by last seasons winner Hatchet by 15 points - so he still slipped under the radar somewhat.
FinalWhen it came to - The best was definitely saved for last. The first thing that immediately stands out is how Cromaniac absolutely peaked in . His performance in the final saw him register more frags in a heat than he had at any point previously in the tournament. He paired this with his best efficiency and his highest number of kill streaks. Basically, he saved the best for last. This is in sharp contrast to all of the other finalists, who had all (with the exception of Riven) registered higher scores in their earlier heats - as you would expect mostly due to the competition getting harder and harder the deeper into the tournament you go.
Curiously, Cromaniac actually only finished 4th for total frags across the whole competition, and his best individual score was only the 15th best
Cromaniac's acc also proves that you don't need to be shooting 40+ acc to succeed even in the big iDM games. Cromaniac's final performance was basically made on the back of the fact that he died 31.7 times less than the average (23 less than the 2nd least) amount of deaths in the final. By spending less time spawning and walking around the map, he managed to snipe himself enough frags to take the first KOTG crown.
Thanks kE for all stats pics
So what would've happened if Neo had taken the blue pill?
What the fuck are you talking about? Cromaniac won. That's true, and he did. This section is just a bit of fun and does not mean to take away from his achievement in any way. Cromaniac is the undisputed champion... but here is how it could have ended had the categorisation of the winner been slightly different.
What immediately stands out about Sonic's stats is how dominant he was in the earlier rounds. Looking at the stats of the first 3 rounds, Sonic should have been the favourite to take the crown going forward. Unfortunately for Sonic, he fell away in the semi final on and barely scraped his way through to the final in 5th spot (10th seed overall).
One bad map did not put him out of it though, and in the final as everybody saw, he was 3 frags away from the crown. Sonic still actually outfragged the eventual winner by 27 frags across all heats, but as we know it's all about peaking at the right time.
With the best relative seedings across all heats, unrealshots should have been the favourite heading into the final. He had a semi-weak performance on Bellicose but was in the top 7 in every other heat he played. Shots is famous for being a hugely dominant fragger, and this tournament was no exception. Looking at the stats only suggests one thing though... that our friend unrealshots choked when it came to crunch time. With the lowest acc of all participants in the final, and his first sub 30 acc in the whole competition (and maybe since birth?) - shots was unable to keep up in the final as he finished just 7th. Shots had also been struggling with slow starts in previous rounds - anybody who watched the stream of his semi final would have seen him languishing in last place with about a quarter of the map played, only for shots to get back into the rhythm and come through to take first place. Unfortunately he was unable to produce a similar performance in the final, and we're still waiting to see if this iCTF ring holder can get himself a KOTG crown.
Lets take a look at the winners of each round. Some of these were expected, some were not.
Former KOTR champion Dewsick wasted no time in rolling back the years by storming to an unprecedented 200
kills in heat 1. Unfortunately for Dewsick's fans and the appreciation of round numbers society, Dewsick took a bath in the slime at some point, leaving his total
frags at a measly 199. This would go on to be the best individual frag score across the whole competition.
n0b? On thoth? BT-Thoth? Carrying on from his run to the finals in sDOM, n0b continues to offer further proof that he is not just a BT and movement master anymore. Despite practicing for a grand total of 0 minutes (presumably), n0b had the highest individual score on Thoth. In honour of glorious leader, by using his tag from the sDOM season, it's nice that PACO's name was involved in winning something.
Nick's form in the first 3 rounds was incredible. He won his heat with 197 in which was the 2nd best in the whole round. Won his heat with 144 in (11th best in round), and won his heat and the whole round with 163 in a stacked that also saw heavy hitters bleh, Impure, bug and snap be eliminated. Oh and paco. Unfortunately, Malevolence was not the map for him, and he didn't make it out of his semi final - in a heat which also saw Round 2 winner n0b eliminated.
With the next day booked off work and the roads of a small northern town closed down the next morning - everything was looking good for Hatchet's victory parade at this point. Hatchet put in an ominous performance in the semi final - dropping 40.56 acc on his way to being the highest fragger in his heat and the round. Unfortunately as we later saw there was to be no repeat win for Hatchet, who has already booked off all Monday's in 2015 as he begins his training regime for the next tournament.
Finally, here is a complete list of the finishing positions of all players, including their total frags and their best performances. It's a spoiler as it's quite a big list:
