[sDOM.I] Announcement

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

We are proud to announce the first installment of sDOM on Owned Well. Sign ups are now open at http://www.ownedwell.com/Leagues/UT99/sDOM_I/ .

Schedule:
Draft: 18th January
Group stage: ~25th January to mid February
Play off: ~mid February to late February / early March

Availability:
Players who sign up with Full Availability will be expected to make at least around 75% of the matches. If a player cannot commit to at least this amount of matches, they can sign up with partial availability which will make them a Mercenary and ineligible to participate in the playoffs.

Match Times:
Will be similar to the iCTF season with Development games at 2.30/3.30 EST and Regular games at 4.00/5.00/5.30 EST

Wait... what are Development games?
To give the lower skilled players a chance to play we have created something called 'Development matches', where the majority of the players are lower skilled players, aided by 1 or 2 high skilled players. This means there's room for even lower skilled players to get into the competitive scene and perhaps even pick up some new things on the way! Development matches are played in the 'group stages' - in this case the first three weeks.

Map Selection:
We are still evaluating the result from the elimination system and are eager to get more feedback before deciding what system we will be going with this time.

Maplist:
This will have it's own thread as we decide what maps are worthy/unworthy and how many we actually want in the competition. There are some new maps in the making which we would like to see play tested. Map list discussion is now open, go check it out .

Rules:
These will be ironed out at least a week before the draft.
There are a few things still to be discussed and those will be brought up for discussion after iCTF have finished.

Sign ups:
Now open at http://www.ownedwell.com/Leagues/UT99/sDOM_I/ .
Sign ups will close a few days before the draft (exact date will be announced later) and similar to iCTF NO late entries are allowed: so sign up on time.

New to sDOM?
No problem. If you're interested in playing sDOM, sign up! There's still time to learn, a lot of people that can help out and there's also .

New to draft leagues?
If you'd like to learn more about how draft leagues work, be sure to check out .

There will be a lot more posts leading up to the draft. If anyone has any questions or issues that they would like addressed, post them sooner rather than later.

Idea:

A. Take out cinder, curse, and deck at a minimum. They're boring, frag-focused maps that are so easy to shutdown (as we saw multiple times last season). There's a reason deck and curse weren't in the first sdom season, and the edits to cinder just didn't help it enough.

B. Use an elimination format, and consider removing even more maps or replacing some with new ones. Do not focus as much on editing existing maps. We have plenty of maps that work well as-is, and the focus should be on cutting out the bad (12 maps is too many). It's better to replace a mediocre old map with a good new one instead of editing the old, also.

Elimination with a small maplist works particularly well in sdom because:
1. It's unlikely that we'll see the same maps played in most matches (like in ictf)
2. sDOM is a mod full of specialized positions and players. There are very few players, for example, who can expect to beat ph34r at tempest high or peak low. This is part of the reason you see teams getting raped on one map and then raping on the next one. Elimination creates more exciting matchups and also gives mid salaried captains more options during the draft, as the few elite and versatile players (rum, bleh, etc) usually either captain or are taken early.

Some of the biggest complaints in this thread (http://www.globalunreal.com/forums/view ... 109&t=2542) were about the 3 maps I mentioned, the size of the maplist in general, and the lack of elimination.

I really believe that this proposed format would kill multiple birds with one stone. You get an improved maplist and more balanced matches with none of the problems we saw in ictf. Having a small maplist comprised of good old maps with a few good new ones lets fans of a small and more traditional maplist like morpheus be happy, but also makes fans of more progressive ideas and new maps happy.

God damn I miss the dark layout of globalunreal, this all white bright in your face wake up nonsense is killing me.

I disagree about Curse, I think it flowed fine and you don't have to be a great fragger to work ledge well. Cinder I'm indifferent about, wouldn't care if it was removed as long as a better map took its place. Deck absolutely has to disappear, the map is fucking awful.

Seems way too early for another sDOM season or maybe I'm just crazy.

Why not Sniper with powerups or something ? Especially since the last Sniper season was way older than the last sDOM season.

I love SDOM.

Longer seasons appreciated.

Not as interested in reg weapons. I like newnet weapons just fine but I've heard a bit of wawa about laggy particle weapons blowing up nubs. And then there's just the jerks that want to keep their 30-50 ping hitscan advantage.
